Is there any timeline for the next release of SLife for Mac? I think it's a great program, but the fact that it doesn't count typing as an activity means that I have no record of how much time I spend word processing (which I know is a lot, but I need to know exactly how much!). I was just wondering how long I'll have to wait for this functionality. Thanks!
A question was posed here about tracking meetings, but I thought I'd expand upon that. I'd love to see the ability to track physical activities. One way this could work is by bringing up a dialog after a configurable period of idleness. When the user returns this dialog could ask if they would like to track any of the time spent away from their desk. They could assign an activity to this time, enter a brief description, and choose an amount of time to attribute to the activity. That would be great to cover things like research (with books!), manual work (physical mockups, etc.), and of course, meetings.
When looking at the "Web & Docoments" view, please drag & drop the documents to activities in the sidebar, and remember to associate those documents with that task in the future. That way we can organize what we've done even if we've already done it.
According to ethomaz, SLife does only regard mouse movement as an activity.
I do a lot of what I do just using keyboard shortcuts and Quicksilver. I also do a lot of text processing. SLife won't track any of this? Why?
What's the use of trying to track my working hours when working (typing) isn't regarded an activity?
The biggest feature lacking I think is a formal notion of clients. While it's possible to define clients with activities, it's especially difficult to do that in my organization where we deal with at least several different clients per month. Month after month that would really start to add up. And beyond that, for each client, there is a lot of work being done spread across multiple applications, both desktop and web-based. The latter is particularly difficult to track, requiring at least a few unique URLs to be entered for each client. Additional files are opened remotely from an FTP, making tracking by client almost impossible.
It would be great to be able to switch between clients from the menu bar's dropdown menu, as manual activity toggling can currently be done. When a client is selected all activities would be attributed to the client.
To track time spent on blogs, etc. it would be easier to add relevant sites as a bookmark folder from Safari/Firefox, rather than adding them individually. The sites that I read regularly are contained in a couple of folders, but I'm always changing those folders as I decide what's worth my time. If added individually I could also see them starting to make using the Web/Documents tab difficult as they would overwhelm the URLs that I use to track web-based application usage.
I use Safari AND Firefox. I disabled (unchecked) the box for Safari, but Slife seems to keep re-adding it. I tried to "remove" Safari, but again, Slife re-adds it. Am I doing something wrong?
Activities are different from projects and should be separated. Activities in slife are focused on applications or sets of applications, which is great, activities are needed - I have a useful activity called data analysis that includes several applications I commonly use to analyze data. I have several different research projects where I do data analysis as well as other activities like taking notes, reading, writing. It doesn't make sense to have a project in the same bucket as an activity, it needs a separate list that acts differently. Firstly there needs to be some manual component because slife can't tell when I'm reading a web page about mysql while I'm working on one project versus reading a very similar page while working on another project - maybe it can under some circumstances but I need to be able to override it since it won't be perfect. I'm sure there are strategies that slife can use to recognize when I switch projects, folder naming or whatever, but this is a fundamentally different thing than an activity and encompasses activities.
Can Slife track activity times when the computer is switched off like OfficeTime?
The point is, some of my activities do not require a computer (like reading and annotating articles I have printed on paper), but are a very important part of my work. Initially I thought 'Activities' in Slife could time such work, but after the idle time, or if I put my computer to sleep, the timer stops. OfficeTime can track times though sleep periods by looking at the computer's clock.
Can Slife do this? If not, will it be possible in the future?
Here's another suggestion for functionality. It'd be nice to be able to specify when your work day starts and ends. I frequently stay up late working until after 2am, and then sleep and start working later the next morning. However, I'd like to count all the work I did (up till I went to sleep) as work done on the day before the work that starts again at 9 or 10am. Currently, slife reports all the work you've done between midnight to midnight, which makes it difficult to figure out individual "daily" work totals. This is especially important if you need to be able to report your "workday" productivity.
I am not asking a question. I am requesting a functionality. I would like the application to be password protected. Especially, I dont want others to see my "Web & Document" section.
Where did the XML files go?? It was a great open interface, now my app is broken. It appears that you are now using a SDF file. Don't know how to access the file and I have no means of programming for a Mac. do you have an export utility or something? Otherwise I need to back out 2.0 and go back to 1.x.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell, Slife 2.0 cannot be run as a background application, which was one aspect I loved about Slife. If I can't run it as a background application I am honestly considering downgrading back to Slife 1.3.2.
I run both Mac and Windows XP on my Computer. I'd like to see a feature that would combine the time of both, operating systems so I can Compare. Sorta like having a category displaying each application and how much time you use it on both operating systems. Than have a comparable feature for instance, lets say I use Firefox on Mac for 34 minutes, and I use Firefox on Windows XP for 28 minutes, I'd like to see the ability to compare both, from either side of the operating system.
I'd like to be able to assign an activity to an event after I've started it. What often happens in my usage is that I don't even think about engaging in an activity until I'm already doing it. Yes, yes, I try to focus on one thing at a time, but I can drift off into another activity too easily. What I'd like to be able do is say, "hey, that webpage was actually for work" and assign it to an activity afterward.
My ideal scenario is one where Slife would prompt me every once to check if my activity was still relevant or something like that.
I really like your product in SLife. I've been looking for an application and website tracker so I can hopefully stop wasting time, and start being more productive!
I looked at RescueTime, but was really turned off by having upload all my data to their servers. The policy phrase "We will never look at your individual data unless you are having technical difficulties, it is required by law, or it is necessary to maintain our system." is too broad for me. I want to personally control who can see what I'm doing with my time! So I love how your program is hosted entirely on my machine and doesn't send data to anyone. I've been tagging along my support and comments to previously-made suggestions and requests for features and improvements, but I just wanted to post some praise to say thanks for a great product!
I'm having a kind of weird and seemingly inconsistent behavior. SOMETIMES when I manually set an activity (by selecting it from the drop-down in the menu bar) Slife retains the activity even after a reboot. Other times, it doesn't. Obviously, this doesn't make the tracking of my activities very accurate! :^)
